About
San Mateo County Medi-Cal Fee-for-Service Transition
Effective January 1, 2024, some Medi-Cal members in San Mateo County will switch from Health Plan of San Mateo (HPSM) to Kaiser Foundation Health Plan (Kaiser). Members who stay with HPSM will continue to receive dental services through HPSM. Members who switch to Kaiser will receive dental services through the Medi-Cal Dental Fee-for-Service (FFS) program. Changing to Kaiser does not affect your Medi-Cal eligibility or benefits
If you live in San Mateo County, and are enrolled in Kaiser, you will receive dental services through dental FFS. You will need to go to a dental provider who takes Medi-Cal Dental. For more information go to the Notice of Additional Information: Your rights and benefits as you move to a new Medi-Cal health plan.
To find a dental provider, including a video on How to Use the Find a Dentist Tool, visit our Find a Dentist page or call the Medi-Cal Dental Customer Service Center at 1-800-322-6384 (TTY: 1-800-735-2922), Monday through Friday, 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Learn more about your Medi-Cal dental covered services by visiting our Covered Services page.

What Does This Mean for Me if I’m a Provider?
- If you are currently registered as a Medi-Cal Dental FFS Provider, you can continue to provide care to both your existing and new patients.
- However, if you are a Health Plan of San Mateo (HPSM) Provider and are NOT currently enrolled as a Medi-Cal Dental FFS Provider, you will need to enroll in the Dental FFS Program to continue serving your current patients.
- To receive payment for dental services provided to Medi-Cal FFS members, prospective providers must apply and gain approval from Medi-Cal Dental to participate in the program. Detailed enrollment requirements can be found in “Section 3: Enrollment Requirements” of the Provider Handbook.
- Comprehensive guidelines for patient care requirements are available in “Section 4: Treating Members” of the Provider Handbook for your reference.
- Learn about more resources and support in this month’s special Provider Bulletin.
